 "Good Monopod" 2009-12-01
By Patrick Clough (Jamaica W.I.)
Bought this monopod nearly a year now and love it!! Have not used it much, but it works well when i need it.

I am 5'10" tall and when i have my nikon d40 mounted at full extension i have to tip on my toes to see through the eyepiece. Therefore, it should work well for persons in excess of 6' tall with larger cameras.

The head feels solid but i cant say how it would perform with much heavier cameras. Treat it well and it will return the favour.

 "Well built and sturdy" 2009-11-22

I bought this to replace my tripod. I didn't realized it can't replace a tripod, but like it just the same. It is made well and is very sturdy. Once I get the hang of this item I am sure I will use it more and more.

 "Very good monopod" 2009-11-20
By Descenter (Dubai - UAE)
I was surprised by the quality and material this product is made of for this price tag!

It is very well built and truly deserves the Canon logo on it.

However, I am a night phtography fan, and to be honest I have discovered this hobby for only two years till now so you can't say I'm a pro, I bought this monopod to test and see if it will help me get rid of my heavy tripod. Here are my results:

1- Portability: monopod 10/10 - tripod 3/10

2- Weight: mono: very light - tri: well it depends on which brand and price tag you got, but for sure this monopod is a lot lighter than any tripod out there.

3- Steadiness for long exposure shooting: mono: 8/10 if you are sticking the monopod between guard rails or leaning on a wall for example but 2/10 if you are trying to hold it vertically still especially if it is extended to your height which is most of the cases, so you still need to make it lean on something to get very good still photo if your exposure is 2 seconds or more, for less than 2 seconds exposures, I am far better off without the monopod by kneeling on the ground and resting one elbow on the other knee and the other elbow on my chest while using an Image Stabalizer than using a monopod - tripod: 10/10

4- Size when retracted: mono 9/10 (nice copmact and easy to store anywhere, heck it fits in the magazines pocket at the back of the drivers seat in your car) - Tripod: 6/10

Lightweight, sturdy, and easy adjustment. This is exactly what I was looking for to take to the National Parks where a tripod would be a burden.

"Great battery but Manfrotto Modostready Owners Watch Out!" 2009-12-06
By Christopher Vincelette
I have been using this battery with my Canon HF S10 for about 2 months. I regularly get over 3 hours of filming out of it. It's only slightly larger than the battery the camera comes with and adds very little additional weight to the camera.

That said. It does add a small bit of additional weight over the original battery and does so in a way that I have yet to be able to compensate for with my Manfrotto Modosteady. No matter how carefully I calibrate the modo steady with this battery in it seems to put an odd amount of weight to the Back-Left of the camera causing the stabilizer to jitter during pans and during otherwise steady and motionless shots the camera creeps slowly up and off to the left, every time.

I pop the default battery back in and recalibrate and all these issues go away and I get buttery smooth pans and rock solid stabilization.

If you don't have a modo steady it's a great battery.

If you do have a modo steady don't plan to use this and your modo steady in stabilizer mode at the same time. I'm sure with a quick trip to home depot one could find something to superglue to the underside of the battery to even out the weight distribution.

If I ever get around to doing this I'll post a howto on youtube.

"Great battery even if pricey." 2009-11-27
By Honest Reviewer for you (NY, NY USA)
I use this for the Canon Vixia HG 20. Since the battery that comes with that camera lasts only about an hour this is essential for long video shoots. I get about 3 hours of time. It's a bit larger than the regular battery but it's not cumbersome. Works just like the regular battery too. The only drawback is it's expensive.

 "Worth the money" 2009-11-02
By Khaled Alamdeen (Maryland)
We had the standard battery that came with the camcorder. It only lasted for 59 minutes whcih was not enough when traveling or recording major events. Then we found out about this battery from Canon website. We ordered from Amazon which was cheaper than any store or website. The battery provided at least 120 minutes of recording time. It was great. We used it in our trip to italy and it was the right hing to buy. We were able to record full day of sightseeing without the fear of stoppage or worry about battery life. It was worth the money and investment.

Don't waste your money on the imitations if you need to replace your battery.

Get the Canon.

This replacement doesn't seem to last quite as long as the original battery that came with my camera but way longer that the imitation one that I bought last time for 1/2 the cost which equaled half the charge.

"I doubt this is a Canon product as represented" 2009-11-08
By Michael L. Baird (Morro Bay, CA USA)
I looked hard to find a genuine Canon replacement battery, since most 3rd party batteries are bad news. This one was so expensive I thought it had to be authentic. It arrived 4 days late. I question the authenticity of this "Canon" battery - Cheap cardboard packaging had faded colors, instructions on paper of low quality, the label on the battery was a faded off-color, not like any of my OEM Canon parts, there was no punched hold in the cheap plastic tray to use orientation to indicate charged/not. I can't prove this is a knock-off counterfeit - but even the "hologram" looks fake. I have more faith when Amazon does the fulfillment directly, and I thus hesitate to use 3rd parties for this category of product. Sorry if I'm wrong, it just a bad feeling based on my above observations.

This is compact and lightweight. The plug folds into the charger itself so it stores flat. I took this on a trip to Asia and only needed a plug adapter to use it (no voltage converter needed). The charger can handle up to 240V.

I would only get this if you have 2 batteries for your camcorder - you can still record while recharging the other battery. If you have only 1 battery, just use the in-camcorder charging feature but keep in mind this option will be slower.

"Best product available for the purpose" 2009-11-24

The batteries are comparatively expensive, and the charger isn't cheap, but it's faster than the camcorder (which will also charge a battery) and leaves it free for use. This charger is compactly well-designed with good materials.

This is an excellent alternative than with the in-camera charging or if you have multiple batteries you can charge your extras with this one. I have a total of 3 batteries for my HF100 and this will be a godsend when traveling. Charging batteries with this unit is faster than the vidcam itself.

I am a satisfied owner of this charger. It is simple to use, recharges my camcorder batteries in a timely fashion and best of all, it's about the size of a small bar of soap.  "Incompatible video format" 2009-12-06
By Fred Slocombe (Springfield, IL)
This would have been a winner hands down for the one feature that it has that every other camcorder in it's price range lacks, an audio input jack for external microphone. Every other camcorder in it's price range had neglected the need for good audio.

But, the video format, according to another reviewer, is not compatible with most professional editing software. Sorry. FAIL.

 "great standard camcorder" 2009-12-06
By K. Frederick
I did a lot of research and decided the best route for me was to stay with a standard format rather than HD do to the additional expense of having to buy a newer DVD player and a more powerful computer. The software is not great but works...not very intuitive. Once I figured out the software burning a movie is easy and looks great played on my upconverting DVD player and viewed on my LCD TV.

 "NOT FOR MAC" 2009-12-04
By James M. Rivers (Cheraw, SC)
Okay, I bought this camcorder as everything looked good as to its abilities and I know I need to convert to a newer media; still use 8mm on a Sony for last 7 years, a fine machine indeed. Went with Canon for the Mac compatibility. WRONG! Its a shame too as this is one small, gorgeous piece of equipment. Quality is good, for the money no doubt but my 2006 Imac with OSX 10.4.11 will not recognize the camcorder; camera portion is recognized but who buys a camcorder just for the camera? There are numerous posts on this camcorder's compatibility with Mac on how to get around the problem but who wants to go through this? I have ordered the newest flip and am sending the Canon Fs 200 back even though i can't imagine just have a maximum of 2 hours recording space while on a trip, as I do not have a laptop. But hey, shooting better quality video that you cannot edit and store is worthless, Mac compatibility, at least for Imac owners, is the key, in my opinion.

"Best Of Breed. Excellent Value. Video Tour" 2009-12-03
By Jack Olmsted (Port Townsend, WA)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RUJRILMJIXTFP 10-year-old TIME For Kids Reporter, Brennan LaBrie, and I purchased Canon FS200 camcorders on sale a couple of days before Thanksgiving. As a budding journalist that is planning to cover the Vancouver 2010 Olympics Games, Brennan's basic requirements in his second flash based camcorder were:

- external mic for interviews

- headphone jack to monitor audio levels (handheld mic to close, not close enough, background noise to loud, etc.)

- optical zoom to capture action that far away

- battery monitor in real time

- fast battery charge (20 minutes charging a depleted FS200 battery yields 60 minutes of recording time)

This video tour around the FS200 was recorded with my FS200 and edited with Microsoft's Windows Movie Maker (the free program imports .MOD files). It was recorded at the Port Townsend Library (no special lighting was required). We were very happy with the picture and audio (internal mic) quality in this video. Part two of this tour will be published on YouTube soon. Search: Canon FS200

For price/performance, the FS200 is the "best of breed" on the market today. It is the perfect portable pocket camcorder for a KidReporter that has to get their reports online ASAP.

Brennan LaBrie's Winter Olympic coverage using the FS200 can be accessed through a Google Search on his name.

NOTE: The background music is one of the tunes that is on the FS200 CD.

"I'm the annoying guy with the camcorder now" 2009-11-30
By M. Hinze (Texas)
Compact and lightweight.. excellent feature set.. I do not miss the view finder. Once you get used to the controls and follow along in the manual for a few minutes you get the interface. Everything defaults to automatic but you can adjust focus, mic levels, aperture and shutter speed in a couple clicks of the thumbstick. Picture quality is great, of course, even at non HD quality. I didn't install the bundled software - there is free video editing software from Microsoft called Live Movie Maker that works perfect for PCs and can automatically upload to YouTube. For bigger jobs I got Sony Vegas 9 - I tried them both out and they work fine. I can see battery life being a problem but I haven't been too far from an outlet for it to totally run out. I did run out of internal memory but syncing to the PC is easy. I love the internal memory and I like not having a hard drive in there. Very happy with the decision to go with the HF20.

"Fail in three weeks, poor support!" 2009-11-10
By K. Chung (corona, ca United States)
I have never wrote a review in my life and I really want to share my experience with everyone this time. I bought this camera for a 8 months business trip to Hong Kong. I have purchased 2 extra battery pack BP-809 for it so I have a total of 3 batteries. After 2 weeks, the camcorder start having problem recognizing the batteries, at first I can fix the problem by switching between the pack, 3 days ago it won't even take any of my batteries! I call Canon locally in Hong Kong and they said they will have to charge me just to LOOK at it, repair cost extra!!! I am very disappoint at Canon, I have been a customer forever, I have a 40D, 50D, 5DmkII and tons of Lens from you guys and the quality has been superb. The first digi cam I bought and I've got problem from it in less than a month and Canon won't even try to help. I am stuck here in Asia, I need this camera to do my job and if I ship it back to US it will cost me a lot of money and time... Beside, I really hate the idea of repairing and crack open an expensive camera in it's first month, I even called Canon USA back home and ask if they can help... After an hour wait time with an international phone call, the answer is very disappointing: unless I can ship the camera back, there is nothing they can do... I don't understand it, I have a service center less than a mile away, and yet they still trying to tell me I am stuck... How's that for customer service?

"Prosumer camera, emphasis on the Pro" 2009-12-04
By Articholus (Chicago)
The camera is great. Very easy to use. Lots of features. We use it mainly to document our new baby and we love how easy it is.

Until we try to get the video off the camera.

As others have noted, the codec (the avc in the avchd) is more advanced than a lot of software can handle.

Warning to Mac users: you can only import the native .MTS files (the format the camera saves in) if you have an Intel machine AND if you are running Leopard AND if you have the latest version of iMovie or Final Cut or Final Cut Express. My Intel iMac running Tiger with FCE 3 and iMovie 2008 is useless without 3rd party software that I've found to be very suspect.

Bottom line is that this camera was designed for one group of people (consumers with high standards and an interest in controlling the elements of their video) but can only be used by another (professionals with the latest hardware and editing suites). If you're in the sweet spot, go for it. Otherwise, this is a very bad purchase.

 "Compatible SDHC cards" 2009-12-03
By G. Vig (Ashland, VA)
So far we have really enjoyed this camera. With that said one thing that I learned the hard was is that you can only record in the higher video modes using a class 4 or 6 card. I purchased a Class 10 card which will only record in the lower settings. After research I found buried on the Canon page that the Class 10 cards came out after the camera was released and will only record in the lower settings. Hope to keep someone else from making the same mistake I did.

 "Hands-on after a month using the HF200" 2009-11-30
By M. Burrows (Seattle, WA)
Overall I like this camera and would recommend its purchase if you are only shooting in well-lit areas. Shooting indoors without either a high quality video light or good ambient lighting will result in grainy results.

Outdoors, even on overcast days, it compares well with the Sony HDR-XR500V I have used. Although half the price of the Sony model, the HF200 gives great visual captures, even better when used in with a tripod. The Sony XR500 seemed to produce a steadier image when hand-held, though the video is still passable for home use with the Canon. I have not experimented with editing the video using a quality video package yet (in an attempt to reduce video shake), but likely this would help.

The HF200 has a small size video light shoe on the top, it's not a standard size.

The size and weight of the HF200 is very good, though the hand strap would be a bit tight to a larger male hand. Adjusting this strap correctly really reduced video shake.

The HF200 comes with no storage. You have to use an SD-HC card. Anything "Class 4" or better speed rating works well. My 16Gb Class 4 Sandisk cards work great, with no data loss as it records at the highest quality and resolution.

I did not buy this camcorder via here, rather I used a local warehouse "club" as the price was comparable and I could use it without return hassles locally.

At half the price of the Sony I will be keeping this. I would recommend checking both out, and making a call based on the amount of times you will be recording inside.

Hope this helps

 "Consider the audio too..." 2009-11-26
By Rod Daynes (Wenham, MA USA)
This is a fine camcorder, one could really call it a "prosumer" level camera. You certainly can get great quality for a reasonably low price. The video quality is what one would expect from a company like Canon, excellent, so I'd like to "focus" my review on the audio portion of this camcorder, which is often overlooked. The built-in stereo mic is designed to pick up just about every sound, i.e., ambience, noises all around, noises that you make while recording, in addition to the audio that you want to capture, that is, cacophony. To remedy this, the HF200 includes a "mini" shoe for an optional directional shotgun mic, such as the Canon DM-100, which is what they recommend, obviously. However, while Canon may be a great company when it comes to video, this particular mic leaves something to be desired in my opinion (read reviews elsewhere). Still, if you want to capture decent directional audio, in addition to video, you should consider a shotgun mic. I like the Rode VideoMic ([...] ). Rode mics are universally recognized among audio engineers as among the best in the business, and the VideoMic is no exception. The good news is it's really inexpensive, under $200 US (they also make a stereo VideoMic for under $250), and the quality and versatility is unsurpassed, including a wind screen and an innovative shock mount, both designed to reduce ambience. The not so good news is that the shoe mount itself doesn't fit on the HF200's "mini" shoe, you have to sand it down a bit, or you could simply get an extra cable and hold it while shooting (not that difficult), or mount it on a tripod. To many, this will be a turn off, because they'll want a nice fit on top of the camera, and I don't blame them, but really, good audio is equally important to good video. If you're thinking of shelling out the bucks for the HF 200, think also about the audio, and how you'd like to be able to control it, just like the video.
